I feel lucky to have found examples of both the caterpillar and butterfly of Papilio polyxenes, the Black Swallowtail. They’re incredibly beautiful creatures. The caterpillar was on a weed just meters from the road. It was unmistakable due to its bulk. The adult was the first of its species to deign to permit me a photograph. In the past they’ve always been steadily on the move, or landing just out of range as if to tease. I hope they had good lives, and managed to stay off the roads.
